MeVa Turns 50 and Plans Celebration with its Riders

Haverhill, MA — Merrimack Valley Transit (MeVa) proudly marks its 50th anniversary, celebrating five decades of service to the vibrant communities of northeast Massachusetts. Following a bold vote by the Massachusetts legislature to establish ten regional transit authorities across the State to take over for failing private operations in former industrial cities such as Lawrence, Haverhill and Methuen, MeVa (then known as the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority (MVRTA), was established in 1974. MeVa has come a long way since then and now carries 3.4 million riders annually across sixteen cities and towns.

In recent years, MeVa has implemented several exciting initiatives to increase access and opportunity across the region, including going fare-free systemwide, doubling frequencies in Lawrence, extending service later into the evening, adding Sunday service, optimizing routes, relocating its Lawrence hub to the McGovern Intermodal Station, and establishing MeVa as a great and inclusive place to work, and rebranding the look and feel of vehicles and spaces to be more visible, welcoming and responsive to the culturally and linguistically rich comminates MeVa serves.

MeVa looks to the future with plans for more frequent service, the introduction of bus stops and digital signage, new crosstown service, the establishment of a community space at McGovern Station, the launch of seasonal ferries on the Merrimack River!

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the continued support of our riders, as well as the drivers who operate the buses and vans, the mechanics who fix and maintain the vehicles, the reservationists, road supervisors and dispatchers. In this spirit, MeVa will be holding a rider appreciation in honor of our 50th anniversary celebration! This milestone is all about YOU, and we want to show our gratitude for your incredible support with exciting prizes that will be distributed throughout all of our locations!
