Passenger Code of Conduct

Welcome Aboard MeVa Transit!

At MeVa Transit, we aim to provide safe, comfortable, and enjoyable rides for everyone across the Merrimack Valley. We’re glad you’re riding with us, and we appreciate your help in creating a positive experience for all.

To keep things running smoothly, please follow the guidelines below.

Safety First!

  • Be Visible, Be Safe: Stand where the driver can clearly see you.
  • Flag Stop System: Give a friendly wave to signal the bus – even if there’s no stop sign.
  • Stay Aware: Wait on the correct side of the road and never cross in front of a moving bus.
  • Board with Care: Let exiting passengers off before stepping on.
  • Exit Safely: Remain seated until the bus stops completely and check your surroundings before stepping down.

Courtesy and Cleanliness: Small Acts, Big Impact

  • Seats are for passengers – not feet or bags. Please store personal items under your seat.
  • Oxygen tanks, respirators, and concentrators are allowed but should be stored in a way to leave space for other passengers.
  • Keep aisles clear so everyone can move safely.
  • Priority seating up front is reserved for older adults, people with mobility devices, and caregivers with strollers.
  • Help keep MeVa clean and welcoming by taking your trash with you.
  • Follow all instructions from MeVa Transit team members – they’re here to help.
  • Be respectful of fellow riders and the communities we serve.
  • Please wear appropriate attire: shirt, pants or shorts, and shoes required.
  • Music and videos are welcome – just keep them in your headphones and at a volume only you can hear.

What’s not allowed

For everyone’s safety and comfort:

  • Violence, threats, intimidation, or verbal or physical assault – including toward MeVa staff – will not be tolerated and may result in removal from the bus and loss of riding privileges.
  • Firearms and other weapons are prohibited.
  • Illegal drugs and open containers of alcohol are not permitted. Riders who appear intoxicated may be denied boarding or asked to exit.
  • Smoking or vaping of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is not allowed onboard or at transit stations.
  • Soliciting requires prior approval from MeVa Transit management.

Animals Onboard

  • Service animals are always welcome.
  • Pets and support animals are welcome if they’re in a carrier that fits on your lap or safely under a seat. Animals outside these guidelines (except service animals) can’t be accommodated.

Bicycles and Scooters

  • Bikes and scooters must be secured in designated areas like bike racks and must not block seats, aisles, doors, or exits. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Our supervisors are here to ensure a safe and comfortable ride for everyone. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in removal from the vehicle and, in some cases, loss of future riding privileges.

For your safety and ours, buses may use audio and video recording.

Thanks for riding MeVa Transit and for being a valued part of our Merrimack Valley community.
